I was ready to buy 4100 although being a little concerned about limited 3 pt attachments. After reading some past postings about 4100 not being strong enough to handle some 3pt equipment even though I probably won't put a backhoe on this unit I was concerned that not even a rear blade is listed in compatibility chart. I read where there is a little concern about stength of transmission to handle these implements. Also I have a question on live pto, with the safety feature of the engine shutting down when operator leaves the seat how do you operate a 3pt log spitter, or pto chipper shredder. I just need a few more questions answered. I am considering 4100 gear.

IF the JD4100's PTO safety switches work like those on my 4400, then to engage the rear PTO once out of the seat, the operator merely sets the parking brake and re-engages the rear PTO (the center PTO will not engage in this manner). While this is a safety issue, it is also very inconvenient while tank spraying and needing to periodically get out of the seat to get down off the tractor and use the wand instead of the booms. Bypassing the seat safety switch is easy, but not recommended. ....

I have had a 4100 gear with a loader for about a year now. I have had no problems, and have no complaints! I have a 5' land pride rear blade. I also have a 5' finishing mower which is a 500# implement and have no problems. The 4100 has a 3pt. capacity of around 900# (I think), so you should be able to put on just about anything. After having this for a year, I have no regrets about buying it. I just wish all of the attachments were not so expensive. As far as the PTO is concerned, if you go to a dealer to look at the tractor, look under the seet. There is a safety switch under it for the PTO. You just pull up the plunger and move a wire support to hold the seat off the switch.Good luck! ....

Bruce,I think you'll find the safety switch feature on all makes. This feature can easily be overridden. I was also under the impression that the 4100 wasn't strong enough for a back-hoe, until a few post'ers brought it to my attention that no-where is this actually stated or that JD would void your warrenty for doing so. Thus, it appears to be more of an assumption than a fact. I would like to know JD's "real" reasoning for not offering a back-hoe on the 4100.So far, I love our 4100 with no regrets. ....

I also have the 4100 with no problems after using quite a few attachments over the past 1+ yr. including box blade and pulverizer, finish mower and bushhog. I would not put a backhoe on the machine, it is not recommended but then again I don't need one either so it doesn't matter to me. The machine does what I need it to do and I believe it will hold up for many years, probably longer than I will. It has certainly saved me many backaches if I were to attempt doing the many things it has accomplished. ....

I have customers using everything from Kelly backhoes to specialty vegatable
planters. J.D. only offers a small line of attachments for the 4100 because
of the fact that its chasis is unique in the 4000 series family. It just doesn't
pencil out to spend the money to develop a backhoe that only could fit the 4100
when market research shows the majority of backhoes are sold on higher horsepower tractors. But never fear. Just because Deere doesn't offer a certain
kind of attachment does NOT mean it's not reccomended. There are hundreds of
"short line" products available from your local dealer. Just ask.
